Welcome to the Longmont Police Department Detective Division page. This Division is staffed with some of the most talented and skilled investigators in Northern Colorado.  The detectives are supported by a diverse and professional civilian staff and well-trained volunteers.  Each member of the Detective Division is dedicated, tenacious, and committed to the citizens of Longmont.  The Detective Division of the Longmont Police Department is divided into four units.  Division Commander Craig Earhart oversees the division. The general detective section consists of three units: Persons Crimes, Property Crimes, and Fraud & Forgery.  Those units are staffed by two Detective Sergeants, ten Detectives, one Intelligence Officer, two Secretaries, and two Volunteers.  The Special Enforcement Unit consists of one Sergeant, three Detectives, and one Volunteer.  The entire Division is responsible for felony investigations. The team concept approach is utilized by the Detective Division and is exemplified by weekly briefings exchanging criminal intelligence information amongst the detectives.

Officers selected for assignment to the Detective Division are chosen for their knowledge, skills and abilities they exhibited as patrol officers and for their desire to do the specific job for which they have applied.  Members of the Detective Division receive extensive specialized training to help develop them into capable interviewers and investigators.  The Detectives Division is the unit that investigates all, but is not limited to, major felony crimes in Longmont.  The goal of the division is to be proactive, in a fair and impartial manner, in seeking out all identified individuals who participate in illegal felony activities and to take an aggressive stance, enforcing the laws to protect citizens against crime.  In criminal investigations the division works with many other agencies to investigate its cases and to network information.  When necessary the division works with federal law enforcement agencies such as INS, IRS, DEA, FBI, and ATF.  All Detectives work very closely with the Boulder County District Attorney's Office. This helps to ensure proper legal practices before apprehending experienced criminals who may try to escape prosecution on technicalities.

The Detectives are called upon to address the problems of criminal activity in a variety of manners that may include:

·       High visibility plain-clothes work

·       Undercover operations

·       Surveillance

·       Intelligence gathering

·       Background investigations

·       Search warrants

·       Arrest warrants

The Longmont Police Department’s Detective Division is responsible for most all of the follow-up felony investigations within the department.  Officers from the Patrol Division take the initial felony complaint from a citizen and if the patrol officer cannot clear the case it is forwarded to the Detective Division.  A Detective Sergeant then reviews the case reports.  After evaluating the case, the sergeant will assign a detective for case follow-up.  The detectives use traditional investigative methods to investigate crimes they are assigned such as collection of physical evidence, interview and interrogation techniques, computer technology and the back to basics leg work to solve their cases.

The most recognized duties of detectives include receiving reports prepared by the patrol officers and performing the appropriate follow up investigations; but to respond to a serious crime and initiate an investigation based on the type of crime, detectives must be able to identify, preserve, and collect evidence at a crime scene. They must prepare reports for use by the District Attorney in court. They have to testify in court and give accurate, detailed testimony relative to the results of criminal investigations. They must interview witnesses and interrogate suspects, prepare formal statements and arrest persons suspected of committing crimes based on probable cause or by warrant.

The Detective Division works towards the Longmont Police Department’s mission of making the City a safe place to live, work, or visit. Through the efforts of the personnel assigned to this Division we have attacked issues the members of our community have shared with us as being detrimental to the quality of life in Longmont.  While it is difficult to truly reflect in words the energy that our detectives put into their assignments, their accomplishments tend to speak for themselves.  The Detective Division can be reach at 303-651-8523.
